Arts Program as Community Infrastructure

Creative Zone JC is a structured monthly arts lab serving Jersey City youth and emerging creatives. Launched in 2025, the program provides consistent, hands on instruction in acting, cinematic production, and content development within a professional studio environment.

The program operates year round and remains free and accessible to participants.

Who We Serve

Creative Zone JC serves participants from youth to adults and older community members, providing a dedicated space for artistic growth and creative exploration through structured learning and focused labs.

Our initiative is specifically designed for Jersey City youth, young adults and emerging creatives who are seeking professional development in cinematic storytelling, acting, and modern digital production.

The program is designed to remove financial barriers while providing access to professional studio environments and industry level mentorship.

Core Program Areas

  • Cinematic storytelling and visual composition
  • Acting and performance development
  • Media literacy and production training
  • Content creation and digital distribution
  • Collaborative creative projects

Program Activities

Creative Zone operates as a three hour structured lab held monthly.

Each session includes:

• Guided acting line work and scene development
• Cinematic camera training and on camera coaching
• Content creation workshops
• Professional headshot sessions
• Guest artist instruction and mentorship
• Hands on production exercises

Participants engage in both instructional segments and applied creative lab time, building technical skill and creative confidence.

Program Impact

Since launching in 2025, Creative Zone JC has facilitated 7 structured three hour arts education lab sessions serving Jersey City residents.

Initial sessions averaged 8 consistent participants. As demand increased through community referral and organic growth, the program expanded to over 60 registered creatives, with approximately 12 participants attending consistently. Average in person attendance ranges between 20–30% of registered participants per session.

Participants represent predominantly Latino, African American and other diverse minority community members who are residents of Jersey City, youth and adults, many from low income and underrepresented communities, seeking access to professional creative development spaces.

Each session results in the production of original cinematic scenes, digital content pieces, professional headshots, and collaborative media exercises, contributing to measurable skill development and portfolio building.

The program operates year-round and remains fully accessible at no cost to participants.

Teaching Artists & Facilities

Creative Zone JC sessions are led by Janisha “Jae” Martinez, a multi disciplinary educator and artist, alongside a rotating roster of guest teaching artists and industry professionals like Hollywood Talent Adrian Alvarado. These instructors provide direct mentorship, sharing technical mastery and real world creative experience with all participants.

Program Achievement(Projected by May 2027)

By September 2027, Creative Zone JC will produce measurable creative and professional growth outcomes for Jersey City residents participating in the program. The expected outcomes include:

  • The production of one short film created by Jersey City resident participants. Attendees will be selected through a structured track focused on storytelling, acting, and content creation. This film will serve as both a learning experience and a public showcase of local talent.
  • The development of original content created by participants that reflects their personal growth, creative voice, and skill progression throughout the program. This includes video, digital media, and performance-based work.
  • The launch of at least 2 to 3 participant led podcast channels. These platforms will allow attendees to continue building their craft, express their perspectives, and create sustainable creative opportunities beyond the program.

These outcomes are designed to strengthen confidence, professional skills, collaboration, and long term creative pathways for Jersey City residents.

Universal Access

Creative Zone JC is free and open to the public. We welcome creatives of all backgrounds, skill levels, and life experiences, from youth to adults and older community members.

Our goal is to remove obstacles to arts and culture education by providing consistent, structured sessions in safe and accessible community spaces across Jersey City, including the Cannabis Place Community Impact Room.

We are committed to inclusion and make reasonable accommodations so individuals with disabilities can fully participate. We also track attendance, engagement, and creative growth to ensure participants are building real skills, confidence, and long term creative pathways.

Creative Zone JC is about more than access. It is about structure, accountability, and helping people grow through consistent opportunity.
